La Palmyre Zoo

Near Royan in the department of Charente Maritime is the La Palmyre zoo, where a 4 kilometre track running through apparently natural vegetation permits the visitor to watch more than 1500 species of animal and bird in something approaching their natural habitat.

Perhaps due to this environment, La Palmyre was the first French zoo to successfully breed gorillas, amongst other rare species, and in the nursery area visitors can still discover babies of many types.
