Poitiers is a city in the Vienne department - with a TGV to Paris-Bordeaux and good road access to the Limousin region. It also has an airport (Biard) which has flights direct from the UK.
Just to the south of the city is a place called Saint Benoit: here you can go canoeing or walk over the river on a disused railway bridge - unlike in the UK, it is not fenced off and the drop is quite scary!
